Tank vs. Tankless Water Heater Leaks: What's Different

Tank and tankless units fail in completely different places — know your machine.

Tank vs. Tankless Water Heater Leaks: What's Different — Valrico FL

"My water heater is leaking" means very different things for tank and tankless units. The failure points, the urgency, and the fix all differ — here's the breakdown.

Tank Heaters: Where They Leak

Forty to fifty gallons of stored water under pressure, in a steel tank fighting corrosion from both sides. Leaks appear at the drain valve, T&P valve, top fittings and nipples — and fatally, at the tank seam or base. A tank-wall leak means replacement; everything else is usually repairable.

Tankless Units: Where They Leak

No stored water, but high-pressure flow through a compact heat exchanger. Leaks show up at water connections, the pressure relief valve, internal seals and O-rings, the heat exchanger itself, and the condensate drain on high-efficiency models. Most are seal or scale issues — very fixable.

Which Is More Urgent?

A leaking tank can release tens of gallons quickly — higher flood risk, higher urgency. Tankless leaks are usually slow seeps, but water near the unit's electronics is its own hazard. Either way, shut the water off and call (833) 713-2101.

Prevention Differs Too

Tanks need annual flushing and anode rod replacement. Tankless units need descaling every 12–18 months — skip it in Florida's hard water and scale will force leaks at seals within a few years. Different machines, different maintenance, same phone number when either one drips.
